She opened up the door and grinned
And said God, it’s been a long long time
It’s so good to see your face again
I asked her ain’t you gonna let me in
She said give me a second, I swear I won’t be long
Then she came back to the front porch
With her blue jeans and her makeup on
We stared out at the summer sky
And laughed about the memories
So hard it almost made us cry
And it seemed to take us back in time
To the best of friends, as close as we could be
She’d always tell me
There ain’t nothing you can hide from me
But if she only knew
About the way that I once used to dream of her
I wonder what she’d say
If she now could see what she once meant to me
Would she laugh out loud and tell me that I was a fool
If she only knew
Now days go by, turning us gray
And making us older
But secrets left untold remain through time
She said you tell me yours
And I’ll tell you mine
The sun was fading from the sky
I guess it’s time that I should leave
So I go to kiss her on the cheek
And I see she’s drifted off to sleep
So I take her hand for a moment then I let it go
Close the gate behind me and I head off down a dusty road
But if she only knew
About the way that I once used to dream of her
I wonder what she’d say
If she now could see
What she once meant to me
Would she laugh out loud
And tell me that I was a fool
If she only knew
